Gender equality is an important topic in the German-speaking countries. It is normal for parents to help each other raise their children and that both mother and father have the possibility for a parental leave.
It is usual that kids visit a kindergarten and start the primary school with the age of 6 or 7. After the primary school students have different ways to fulfill their school education.

If you talk to a child you can ask:

If you ask a child about school, you can say:

In Austria and in Germany kids starts with the primary school at the age of 6 or 7. In both countries you have to visit the primary schools for four years. Most children go to municipal primary schools that are free, but there are a lot of private schools too.

After primary school you have different possibilities and ways to enter your school career and to fulfill your education. If you think of studying at the university one day, you have to choose a school career that helps you to get the graduation, which is called “Abitur” in Germany and “Matura” in Austria.

You can form the sentence by insert a concrete activity like “in die Schule gehen” (going to school):

Or you can only specify the object “etwas” if you want to know what does someone like to do, for instance which subjects at school:

A typical issue when talking about school are favorite subjects. If you want to emphasize one or two things out of others use the superlative form of "gern" or "viel". Because both form their comparative and superlative form irregularly we don't spend much  time on this grammatical issue now ;-)

In Austria, as well as in Germany you have no street dogs or cats. But many people have pets at home. People love cats and dogs, especially young children. It is also common that people get to know each other while they take their dog for a walk. Besides cats and dogs, guinea pigs are also very liked by kids.
