The majority of Danes are homeowners and live in houses, or perhaps in an apartment if they live in big cities. Typically, it is the core family that lives together, that is, mother, father and children. It is very unusual for many generations to live together.

There are three types of housing: owner, rental and cooperative housing. In smaller towns, most homes are houses. In larger cities, cooperatives are very common. In cooperative housing, a group of people have joined forces and have made a cooperative that owns the property and rents it out to the members.

Different types of housing:

"It" as formal subject.

You have seen the pronoun "it" (den/det) before and you have learned that it's use depends on the gender of the noun it refers to: 

• "En bil / den er stor."
• "Et hus / det er stort."

But It is also used as a formal subject in sentences with the verb "is (form of be)" in its various forms and where there really is no subject in the sentence. When used in this way, it is not conjugated with the noun, but is always"det:"

• "En bil / det er en stor bil."
• "Et hus / det er et stort hus."

To "kende" something, means that you are familiar with it.
