Traditional Danish food consists of meat, gravy and potatoes. We eat a lot of pig and we eat large portions!
Smørrebrød, which is a Danish specialty, is a kind of open sandwich on rye bread that everyone eats and probably every day. Rye bread is eaten with paté, sausage, eggs and cheese, as well as a lot of other things. Many people eat it for dinner.
Traditional food is not what you see most in the cities or among the younger generations. Here the kitchen is far more international.

When you go to the table, it is polite not to start eating until everyone has been given some food. If you are a guest in someone's house, the host often says "værsgo" to say that you can start.
In some parts of the country, the host will continue to say "have some more," so you can keep eating. In other parts it is assumed that you help yourself if you are still hungry.
When you finish eating, you say "tak for mad," and then the host usually says "velbekomme."
